The mental health of health workers is important because of its relationship with the quality of life of workers and the safety of care for the health of the population served. Therefore we sought to establish the relationship between mental health and satisfaction with the Quality of Life at Work (QLW), in this type of workers.
Methods
Doctors and nurses attended the three levels of care from a health care facility in Guadalajara, Mexico were studied. Probabilistic sample of 322 subjects, was used, Goldberg's GHQ-28 and the CVT-GOHISALO instruments were applied, in order to assess their mental health and QLW. With these data we found the number of people who were considered cases of mental health disorder and of the satisfaction of the QLW in seven dimensions and then sought their relationship.
Results
Of the participants tested, 78% were considered non-cases and 22% were considered cases according to the results of Goldberg’s.
We found a clear correspondence between the Goldberg’s case with non-satisfaction of the QLW per dimension, as well as between satisfaction with Goldberg’n non case and the seven dimensions measured by the CVT-GOHISALO.
All dimensions have a correspondence that goes from 79.7% to 82.3% between satisfaction and non case finding in all of them the value of significance less than 0.05.
Discussion
There is a clear relationship between being satisfied with the QLW and presenting less risk of mental illness.
It is alarming that medical and nursing staff present high rates of mental disease risk by considering as cases to 22% of workers interviewed. Preventive and control programs among health workers to improve their mental health must be established.
