Introduction

SANS 16001:2007 is a management tool to assist organizations to establish, implement, maintain and improve their HIV/ Aids management system, in the quest to reduce HIV and Aids related risks. The quality control and quality assurance of HIV/ Aids in the workplace programme in utilizing the relative new management system standard SANS 1600:2007, is in line with the global standards ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001. This enable organizations to carry out integrated management system audits. The management system removes HIV/ Aids from the CSI (Corporate social Investment) arena by mainstreaming and operation aliasing the management of HIV/ Aids as one of the many risk the organization has to manage. 

Methods

Certification audits were conducted within private organizations as part of an integrated management system approach. It include the measurement and observation of the workplace programme, which consists of 28 clauses and sub clauses by evaluating the process of data collection, planning, implementation, project management and the audit phase. 

Results

The audits revealed positive and negative outcomes with regard to conformities against the standards with regard to inter alia the organizational structures, ethical and legal principles and human resources 

Discussion

HIV/ Aids programmes are often filled with creative ideas and activities, but devoid of measurement and uncertain of impact, years after the start of the pandemic. SANS 16001: 2007 effectively highlights the gaps in the HIV/ Aids management system. Adoption of the standard forces managers to measure and evaluate what their programme, activities have achieved.
