Introduction

The South African health system is continuously experiencing challenges in securing the safety and security of the community. The National Human Resources for health planning (2006) provided a basis for the nursing strategy in South Africa (2008).The basis of this strategy articulates the link between the six aspects of education and training, practice, leadership, regulation, social positioning resources for nursing services and the national health system. This paper will outline the role of the occupational health care sector by means of a conceptual framework to contribute in realizing the implementation of the nursing strategy.

Methods

A pilot focus group was held with Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner’s working in occupational health settings in Pretoria. Purposive sampling was conducted of OHNP with more than two years’ experience, voluntary participating in the study. The question posed was: How can the OH framework realize the nursing strategy?

Results

Open coding was conducted and categories and subcategories emerged, that was related to a clear vision, treatment and support of the client with HIV/ Aids, managing injury on duty and address chronic illnesses. A literature control was conducted to support the findings.

Discussion

Occupational Health Practitioners can be viewed as part of the Primary health care approach in serving the community. Each of the aspects in the Nursing strategy (2008) could be linked with corresponding aspects in occupational health nursing.
