  • The development of modern occupational medicine and occupational health in Mexico is relatively recent; its origins are related to the 1917 revolution and the labor laws for the prevention of occupational injuries and illnesses. In the 40s the social security institutions are open including an occupational diseases department and in the late 60s the first residency in Occupational Medicine was opened. The Labor Department installed in the 40s the Risk Inspection Department, which promoted the training of experts in health and safety. At this moment, there are about 20 graduate programs in Occupational Health around the country, and in the last times has begun the process of certification of occupational physicians, and safety, ergonomic and hygiene specialists. However, most of Schools of Medicine and Engineering have not include in their curricula contents in this area.
