TB, HIV/AIDS and silicosis continue to be major challenges for the South African mining industry. Perceptions about the scale of the epidemic and the responses by industry continue to be negative, partly due to the lack of information on TB programmes within the industry. As part of a new strategy to confront TB, HIV/AIDS and silicosis in the mining industry, the Chamber of Mines embarked on an advocacy campaign to address the matter.
Methods
Various methods were used to support the advocacy strategy, these included development of a strategy to address HIV/AIDS, TB and silicosis, consultations with the tripartite stakeholders, monitoring performance, TB programme reviews and showcasing industry initiatives.
Results
Several commitments from Chamber committees and the EXCO were made regarding prioritization of TB, HIV and AIDS and silicosis. Collation of data on TB and HIV/AIDS was not as successful but review of TB programmes was very successful. Referral systems were developed and post-employment medical care was improved. There was more recognition of work done by mining companies in the fields of TB, HIV/AIDS and silicosis.
Discussion
Perceptions on TB, HIV/AIDS and silicosis in the mining are changing as there is more recognition of work done to improve TB management and data on these diseases are available to other stakeholders. Lack of information on company programmes partly led to fuelling the negative perceptions. New industry commitments and actions and transparency on company programmes are leading to better appreciation of the challenges and opportunities in controlling TB, HIV/AIDS and silicosis in the mining industry.
