Workshops on Computer Workstation Ergonomics(CWE) along with Workplace Illumination Assessment & its rectification are useful tools to prevent musculoskeletal disorders & reduce eyestrain.
Methods
An ergonomic evaluation was conducted in a corporate office in 2009 to assess faulty work postures & illumination levels at computer workstations (n=146) & ascertain the subjects’ symptomatology regarding visual complaints & thereby provide suitable cost-effective modifications. A pre-tested questionnaire eliciting symptoms was circulated amongst participants. For objective assessments anthropometric & goniometric measurements were recorded. An ophthalmologist conducted eye checkups. For evaluation of visual complaints, study sample was divided into two groups, one comprising of computer workstations (CWS) where illumination was >500 Lux (n=62, Group 1) and other where illumination was <500 Lux (n=84, Group 2). A detailed mapping to identify pockets of excess illumination & position & direction of overhead lighting was undertaken.
Results
Excess illumination was recorded at 62 CWS (42.46%). Individual cabins with windows had highest illumination. Group 1 had increased symptomatology pertaining to visual strain (31%) & fatigue (29%) as compared to Group 2, differences being statistically significant. These alarming figures emphasise importance of Workplace Illumination Assessment & its rectification. The authors recommend training programs on workstation ergonomics for preventing musculoskeletal disorders.
The impact of workshops in creating awareness on ergonomics & posture correction was studied in a sample of 100 employees in Oct 2010, revealing 90% were aware that abnormal posture causes musculoskeletal disorders, 73% took care of work posture & 68% took rest breaks.
Discussion
Hence above initiatives & interactive intranet portal on CWE are useful tools to correct faulty work postures, preventing musculoskeletal disorders & eye-strain. A self-help ergonomic tool kit may prove extremely useful on the intranet site of the organization providing guidelines on safe use of computers (with digital movie clips). This toolkit will be presented & shared.
