A1311 Worksite Wellness: Successful Implementation at a Large Manufacturing Facility in Monterrey, Mexico

  • Introduction
    The Hershey Company is committed to the wellness of our employees globally and offers a variety of programs. These programs help to educate, motivate and engage employees to make healthy lifestyle choices, resulting in enhanced overall well-being and optimal productivity.

    Methods
    At the Monterrey, Mexico Plant wellness programs are offered in line with our One Hershey value. Weight Breakers is a 3 month team-based competition for weight loss. It includes weekly packets for exercise and nutrition. Holiday Helper provides simple tips to help employees stay healthy during the busy Mexican holiday season. The program includes daily activities performed during the holidays and helps employees include exercise during these activities such as walking two hours while shopping. The program also provides nutritional tips for meals and desserts. 10,000 Steps helps employees become physically active by tracking the number of steps taken each day with a goal of 10,000 steps per day.

    Results
    During the first year of operations, 76 employees participated in Holiday Helper and there were 290 participants on 104 teams for Weight Breakers. The plant added a Weight Breakers Meal to the cafeteria daily menu. Overall, there were a total of 792 participants in Weight Breakers over the past 3 years with 20% of the total employee plant population participating and 75% finishing the program. There has been an average of 368.5 kg lost each year representing 2 kg lost per person. There were 38 participants in 10,000 Steps with an average of 10,487 daily steps.

    Discussion
    By participating in Hershey's wellness programs, employees lives have been transformed. The programs offered help employees develop healthier habits and provide them with the tools and resources necessary to enhance wellness. When employee take an active role in their own health, we know that their overall health improves resulting in more engaged and productive employees.
