For any multi-locational organization it is important to share the learning from one plant to the other. Generally this is done through issuance of guidelines, memos, notes, case studies etc. However, it remains very difficult for the management to ascertain on a continuous basis, whether corrective action has been taken on similar deficiencies in other plant locations to prevent recurrence. Effective communication and systematic closure of those potential yet common lapses may result in repetition of same cases in other plants. During safety reviews it is felt that there is a need to share occurrence of identical unsafe practices as well as to receive confirmation on proactive rectification is a need of the day. A web-based system named “Confirmation on Action Taken” (CAT) was developed and implemented to ensure preventive action implementation on a continuous basis at all plant locations for prevention of adverse outcomes, including accident and injury.
Methods
The system is operated centrally at the head quarter where required corrective actions related to occupational safety, health and environment related matters are collated. Input flows through various routs such as audits, inspections, incident reports, customer and employee feed-back etc. Once the same is put on the system all plant locations get an alert about the similar risks and harms elsewhere and prompted to act and confirm that the same will not repeat here. Automatic follow-up sent to all concerned ensuring accountability for corrective actions.
Results
During 90 days trial period 102 such corrective request was raised with 3 potential risk factors aimed at 34 locations. Over 60% got closed within a short time while other required follow-up and escalation to senior executives.
Discussion
This system can be very successfully applied to organizations working at various location and have similar process. Hazards and operational lapses can be eliminated effectively.
