  • Introduction  The detergent industry trade association guidelines emphasize the use of biological monitoring of sensitization as an assistance in controlling workplace exposures. Methods  Dr Kirchner will discuss the basic medical monitoring strategies in a global detergent manufacturing company. The emphasis will be on respiratory surveillance, antigen development, and skin prick testing. An emphasis will also be placed on what has been learned through a rigid approach to skin testing thousands of detergent workers every year. This includes an after-action analysis of why the individual was sensitized, leading to continual improvement in enzyme control systems. Results  The attendee will understand a basic approach to medical surveillance which has proven to minimize occupational allergy to enzymes. Discussion. The principles of medical monitoring can be applied to other manufacturing industries using enzymes as a product ingredient or as a manufacturing aid.
