SS017-7 Programme of prevention and combating of occupational disease in Vietnam

Vietnam implemented renovation from 1986. Many kind of economic components develop including private sector and informal sector, especially small and medium scale industries and traditional trade villages. However, Vietnam has to face challenges on environment and occupational health. The rate of injuries and occupational diseases has increased. The actual burden and the socioeconomic cost, the health care expenditures from work-related accidents, injuries and diseases are highly significant. 

The national programme on labour protection, occupational safety and occupational health 2006-2010 has been developed and completed. The programme obtained achievements on occupational safety and health after 5 years. 

In the new context of Vietnam, the government approved the National Programme on Occupational Safety and Occupational Health 2011-2015. The target of this programme has some new issues. The scope of programme has extended to metallurgy and chemical beside electricity, mine and construction. Some new issues are as: Increase the number of enterprise to be examined, inspected and monitored every year; Assist education, training in occupational safety and health; Build up the best practice model; Invest and build new medical unit to examine, diagnose and recover for workers; Assist occupational safety and health for enterprises; Develop education of occupational safety and health in the vocational school, college, university. 

The programme of prevention and combating of occupational disease in Vietnam is accordance with GPA on workers’ health of WHO and Regional frame work for action for occupational health 2011-2015.
