Prevention of Enzyme Allergy in the Manufacturing of Detergent Enzymes

Introduction  Novozymes (formerly Novo Nordisk) has produced enzymes since the 1960's and has, through the years, kept a tight focus on prevention of allergy.    

Methods    Based upon a short description of how enzymes are produced in the company, an overview of the current prevention strategy will be given. The medical part will be further explained and the outcomes of the medical examinations will be shown. Finally, looking forward, some current challenges for OHS in the area of enzyme allergy will be highlighted.    

Results  The attendee will gain an understanding about how enzymes are produced as well as the prevention strategy employing hygiene and medical surveillance techniques.    

Discussion  The approach described can be applied to industries involved in the manufacturing of enzymes other than those specific to detergent manufacturing.
