Introduction: The problem of intoxications among pesticide users seems to be increasing with increasing imports of pesticides in Bolivia. PLAGBOL has, after 10 years of work and coordination with strategic partners and the Municipalities, developed strategies and educational activities to prevent pesticide intoxications among farmers and consumers through an intersectorial approach.

Methods: We implement a strategy that integrates agriculture, education and health areas, with a cross sectional education are directed to different target groups. Programs for strengthening the curricula in technical institutes, colleges of agriculture and teacher training schools are implemented; audiovisual material for different target groups with mass dissemination in virtual form are implemented.

Results: Educational materials in booklets and virtual, about IPM and pesticide intoxications diagnosis, treatment and prevention exists. Surveillance of pesticide poisonings is taking place. The materials are used by different educational institutions, associations, nationally and internationally. The curriculum in agricultural and technical institutes has been strengthened, postgraduate courses in agriculture and medicine has been launched. Agricultural promoters have been trained and are spreading their knowledge to fellow farmers in the villages. Research papers has been presented and helped spread the knowledge of project results. All in all the project has promoted a more rational management of pesticides and alternatives in Bolivia.

Discussion: The problem with pesticide intoxications and pollution will persist in Bolivia for many years to come despite the efforts that have being undertaken. But we believe we can achieve a culture of prevention in the agricultural and consumer population by information and education. And apart from that we must implement international and national policy measures which limits and regulates the use of these chemicals.
