  • Introduction
    Agriculture is a dangerous industry due to the combination of equipment, extreme weather condition, working hours, and elderly workers etc. A project, ‘Safety model for farm work’, about the intervention for improving the health and safety of South Korean farmers will have been proceeding from 2006 to 2014. The aim was to investigate the status quo of farm work and find the effect of health education on the farmers’ safety behavior.

    Methods
    This study was conducted in a prospective study of Korean farmers for three years. Survey data of 230 participants for the awareness and 195 households for the safety conditions were analyzed, using records on the questionnaire concerning the awareness of health and safety as well as the safety handling conditions of agricultural pesticides and machinery once every year from 2006 to 2008.

    Results
    It was found that there were the changing aspects of farmers’ awareness and the fulfillment for safety related to their farming work environment. The results showed that the awareness and the handling of agricultural pesticides, personal protective equipments, and agricultural machinery had gradually positive changes over three years.

    Discussion
    The results indicated that the protection of farmers’ safety and health was provided effectively through the intervention of safety education.
