Introduction:  Exposure to lead comes from several sources in the African context. An example in the informal sector is the mechanics workshops where used car batteries are dismantled. Exposure also occurs in the recycling facility where batteries are completely destroyed to extract the lead. Children are involved especially in the early phases. This study aims to assess the health status of children exposed to lead during recycling

Methods:  Four types of examinations were implemented: clinical, hematological, environmental and toxicological. A questionnaire was sent to 50 children working under the supervision of more than 120 adults. In addition, an evaluation of the activities generating dust in the working environment was conducted.

Results:  Hematological analysis revealed anemia in about half of the children. Two children have been diagnosed with kidney dysfunction. Toxicological results (levels of lead in blood and urine) and dust levels inhaled inside the workshops are underway.

Discussion:  The data indicate that the children’s health was affected by their exposure to lead. Further results will be discussed, as well as the situation and research at other similar sites.
